Why should this problem be dealt with?
Why
do we have to relinquish convenient paper towels? Why should you oblige us
to do so? The answer is very simple: The Earth will be or has already been
at stake. We, human beings, have endangered the environment of the Earth in
many ways such as pollution (air, land and ocean) . The worst of them all
is deforestation for it causes other serious problems. Paper towels are products
of devastation on the Earth by human beings.
Damage
to the environment:
-Nearly
80% of the world's original and old growth forests have been logged or severely
degraded already and in the US we have lost 95% of our old growth forests.
-40% of
the world's industrial logging goes into making paper.
-Old growth
forests make up 16% of the virgin tree fiber used each year to make paper
products.
What happens / will happen as a result:
-the loss of biodiversity
The
destruction of forests means the extinction of thousands of species and variety
of plants and animals. Many of them have never been catalogued scientifically.
-the
warming of the atmosphere
As you know,
trees absorb carbon dioxide and emit oxygen. The less the Earth has trees,
the more its temperature rises. It is predicted that the global temperature
increases 0.3 degree Celsius per decade over the next century, disrupting
normal weather patterns and creating hotter and drier weather. This causes
increasing drought and desertification, crop failures, melting of the polar
ice caps, coastal flooding, and displacement of major vegetation regimes (Forestethics).
