Fear in Politics
I must agree there has been a significant increase in the use of fear in poitics for this election. Though I do not agree with the columnist that it is only purpetuated by the conservatives. The columnist was using fear of an uncontrolled party in office that is using fear. He was trying to create fear of the conservatives. Which I think has been going on since shortly after 9/11 and has been the only arguments against conservatives now labeled as McCarthy-ists. Though I must also agree that it is a very effective tactic to win votes. An appeal to emotions always is... But I have a question, if the ignorant are conservatives; how is it that the middle and upper classes tend to be conservative and the impoverished liberal. I could be completely wrong about that, but that is the impression I get. I wish both sides would state more af a logical view of their sides. In my opinion the conservatives are appealing to moral values while liberals appeal to rights of everyone or actually anything that could possibly be construed as a right. Whatever though, we will see in november... VOTE!

Pathos, Ethos, Logos
I suppose I just need to determine which quotes belong to which type of argument. So I begin by defining my understanding of the three tyoes of arguments: pathos, ethos, and logos. Pathos is the appeal to human emotion in an argument, usually done by showing how beneficial or detrimental something is to a group. Logos utilizes logical approach making an argument appear sound. And ethos is more related to the credibilty of the speaker and generally establishes why someone has the right to argue a certain view.
Passage 3 uses the pathos argument by stating how guys think and feel or actually how they choose not to examine how they feel. The speaker uses a little ethos in emxaming that he is a guy who does what he is saying. However in passge 2 the person states that they have spent a lot of time in Asia. After showing that he knows what he is talking about he states that he does not see "the Asian culture." The first passage states a lot of facts showing that there are more illiterate women than men and that the number of women that are iliterate is increasing. This argument is presumably to get people to see that illiteracy among women is a problem and will continue to be a problem unless something is done. This passage is logos rather than ethos because fact is presented to show there is a problem and not to establish the speaker as an authority on the issue.
