Differences between virtual and real life harrasment...

Dibbell's "A Rape in Cyberspace"

After reading the selection, I think that the main differences between sexual harrasment in the real world and in the virtual world (like on the telephone, in a MOO/MUD, etc.) are obviously the results it produces, by this I mean no one is hurt physically in the virtual world, just mentality. Also the way in which it is regarded by people (besides the rapist and his victim) can be different in the virtual world than in the actual world. In the actual world, rape and sexual harrasment are deplorable, sadistic acts that are punishable by jail time. In my opinion, no sane person in the actual world says things like, "well, she should accept it and just move on," after a woman is raped. But, in the virtual world, there is a possibility of this notion being suggested, I think because it is fake (even though just pretending it is still in my eyes absolutely horrific.) This was a notion suggested by the "technolibertarians" on the MOO who said that "the presence of assholes on the system was a technical inevitability." As was mentiond above the consequences for punishing the offenders in both scenarios are different. In the real world, rapists pay heavily for their crimes. In the virtual world, as in the case of Mr. Bungle, they are simply erased from existence.
