Online Rape
Similar to the situation regarding Racism online, I do not feel there is much value in examining the issue of rape and sexual harassment in online communities such as LamdaMOO. As Dibbell points out, there is no actual physical contact in the case of an online rape, specifically that pertaining to Mr. Bungle. If someone is so deeply involved in their online persona that they are emotionally disturbed by such a situation, I feel they need to take a step back toward reality, or, "RL." Until online persona's gain right to vote, they shouldn't have the same rights of a physical personality. The solution of "toading" the violators account does not seem effective, as deleting one's account only means that the user has to go through the process of creating a new one. It's a waste of time to put so much debate into proper governing of online communities when there is so much controversy in our real life political structure. Just as in the case of racism, all one must do to escape the situation is log off the database. In real life, preventing such a crime is not nearly so easy. I was rather confused about the notion of the "voodoo doll." Was the voodoo doll a program added to the system by Mr. Bungle, or did it already exist within the system code as one of the "objects" that make LamdaMOO a "MUD, Object Oriented?" The medium of the "rape" is a huge factor in how the "crime" is perceived. In the setting of imaginary worlds like LamdaMOO, consisting of nothing but scrolling text, I don't feel the crime warrants the same attention as when occurring in real life. I think people take their online personas way too seriously, to an extent that it can be understood as a multiple-personality disorder.
