Heims Immersion

Heim's "VR 101"

Heims speaks of immersion as the you-are-there experience. He compares it to being surrounded by a hi-fi stereo system, emerging into a "Magic Eye" poster and 3-D graphics. He even compares immersion to a story book. Heims speaks of Helmets to engage in what he calls full immersion, which isolates the senses. They go further into explaining that sensory isolation achieves what researchers are calling "Presence," the you-are-there feeling. I believe that you can have the you-are-there experience, but not fully. Not all your senses would be fully emerged unless you where physically transported. I think you are more likely to have presence, especially if you are surrounded by a 3-D device.
I have experienced many "Magic Eye" pictures, I have been around a lot of stereo systems, and I have read books, but I cant say that I have had the total you-are-there experience. I have felt a part of it, but not actually there. I guess I don’t emerge myself into many things.
Some local places you could experience immersion could be any computer lab the Library, electronic store, music store, ect...
