Virtual Vets
The gaming world has gone a long way as far as graphics and authenticity are concerned. The game “Brothers in Arms” was so realistic and showed off authentic battle scenes from World War II.
The History Channel his using these graphics and this game to illustrate actual occurrences from the war. It will also attempt to portray actual veterans on these battle fields. With these graphics and authentic battle grounds we should feel a real sense of place. At least that is what the director of the documentaries hope to achieve. The documentaries are entitled “Brothers in Arms: The Untold Stories of the 502nd”, which will be shown Dec. 8th on the History channel. "The emotional attachment to these soldiers is different when you see the places they're talking about in full 3-D and in living color," Gregg Backer who is the executive producer said. "You feel like you're there in 1944 with them as they recount their heroics."
“Brothers in Arms,” the video game is also used by the Arms to train soldiers at West Point Academy. The game is used to train cadets in strategy aswell as military history which further impresses me. Any time you can bring both these aspects to life in a virtual world only means that reality and the VR world are merging as technology advances. In fact it almost frightens me to think that these games can be used to train cadets. You would think that these skills should only be available to the privilidged. I understand that these games alone are not enough to turn a gamer into a killing machine but what if one day it is possible to gain all the training necessary to create a one man killing spree or even a gang of terrorists. Learning how to fly a plane could be as easy as buying the latest playstation game console. It is both scary and exciting to see where the gaming world takes us next. As for now it will take us to the battle fields of World War II.
