-- Option 2: Public Figures Chat

I missed this class day although I wish I hadn't. It sounds like it was fun and I think I might have been pretty good at giving off anough clues about my personality so that some but not most of the class would have been able to figure out who I was. I agree with the author of one of the forums when they claimed that facts were the biggest tells and perhaps I would have stayed away from giving off too many facts about my character.

In the class chat there were two ways to go about revealing oneself. Some people used quotes or facts about themselves to reveal their identity, others made an attempt in the way they expressed themselves. Oprah and Clinton were pretty straightforward. They're so well known that the simple mention of being the "wealthiest woman in the world" instantly gave it away. Others, Batman in particular, were harder to figure out.

-- Option 2: Public Figures Chat

The easiest public figures to recognize had to be Paris Hilton and Martin Luther King, Jr. Paris became apparent almost immediately through the language and attitudes Katharine used to portray her. By saying "That's Hot" over and over again, pretty much everyone in our group knew who Katharine was trying to be. She seemed to be bubbly and airheaded, much like the real heiress. The other easily recognized public figure was MLK, Jr.

-- Option 2: Public Figures Chat

When thinking of a person to emulate on a virtual chat, it was somewhat difficult simply because I tried to come up with a figure that I would be able to phrase sentences like - to literally sound like them - without having to gove away clues about myself...that was difficult. I think that made my character, Chandler from the TV show friends difficult to uncover. However, when you give away clues about yourself like a guessing game, the idea becomes a lot easier. For instance "the richest woman in the world". There are only a few possibilities 1) Martha Stewart, 2)Barbara Walters, and 3)Oprah. Simple answer. Uncovering Vince Young, however was a little more challenging. He spoke in a manner that you would expect Vince to speak and responded to various conversational topics in that manner also - no one could in fact, figure him out before he started to give clues about his identity.

Generally speaking I think it was interesting that almost everyone was identified through their profession. Whether problematic or not, I believe this is a necessity given the scope of the project, since it's hard to really know a 'public figure' well enough to emulate his or her personality. Some people did attempt this however, providing details of publicized events in their characters' personal lives.

There were so many people that it was kind of hard to focus and tally everyone's clues. I thought we kind of had to take turns. Whoever was Batman I thought was somewhat more difficult than the others because he was a fictional character. I also thought he was a political idol at first until he said some cheesy line about the protecting the world by "the few" or something. Overall whoever did Batman did a pretty good job.

Robin Williams won for the hardest to guess, mainly because he has the most fickle of personalities. Paris Hilton and Angelina Jolie were relatively easy because of little giveaways that rang bells in my head immediately. When i heard big lips, the only thing i could think about was angelina jolie, Julia Roberts was a backup in case i was wrong. Hunter Thompson was hard but was figured out by either someone who knew a quote, or someone who googled a quote, all i know is that i had never heard of this person.

Roleplaying chat

-- Option 2: Public Figures Chat

Though roleplaying can be fun, trying to portray a known public figure can be quite difficult. I chose to be Robin Williams for the chat, but I think it ended up being a little more than I could handle. Robin Williams is a comedic genius and whether he's actually doing stand-up or not, he acts like he's always on. I spent more time trying to come up with material as fast as he could than actually guessing who everyone else was. Which is also why I think I chose one of the more difficult roles for people to guess. As Robin Williams, I could have answered questions as randomly as possible, never addressing what exactly was being asked, but then the game never would have ended. But I had to throw in something like "I once attempted to be an old woman" so that everone wasn't completely clueless...it was also the biggest give-away.

-- Option 2: Public Figures Chat

During the chat, the characters that have been in the public’s eye/media for the longest time were the easiest ones to recognize. For instance, Oprah, who is well-known throughout America for her talk show, her status, and her humanitarian works, was one of the first characters to be guessed correctly. If the chatroom composed of mostly people from a foreign county, this would not have been the case.

Us as Public Figures

-- Option 2: Public Figures Chat

In our discussion there were the more obvious ones and the not so obvious ones. The obvious ones, like myself, talked about trademarks and were not obscure about anything. Paris was also easy to guess because she kept using the word hot. Robin Williams was a tougher one because he never really talked about himself until the end. With two Kanye Wests things got to be a littl ebit confusing but eventually all worked itself out.

Public Figures

-- Option 2: Public Figures Chat

My person, Oprah, was actually the first to be guessed, but I wasn't exactly making it hard for everyone. I said that she's one of the wealthiest women in the U.S. and someone immediately thought of Oprah because she is so well known and successful in so many different areas. A few other easier ones were Bill Clinton and Jessica Simpson. The reason these were so identifiable was because of things they have said that everyone remembers.

-- Option 2: Public Figures Chat

There were some really good identies. The most easiest was probably Oprah and my own Jennifer Aniston, just because she said the weathiest woman and i said i recently got a divorce and i that i had friends. Bill Clinton and Jessica Simpson were very clever they made gestures that could be picked up on. Some hard ones were Vince, Chapelle, and Batman. Batman made a intellectual statement and I dont think any one was in that state of mind, so it made it hard to pick up on who he was.
