Policy

The coursework will consist of a number of individual assignments that help everybody develop their HTML, CSS, and Photoshop skills. An ongoing group project will be the culminating product of everyone's learning experience: We will have real-life clients who need a redesign of their website and who will choose one of the designs we produce to actually use for their website.

Textbooks

Adobe Creative Team, Adobe Photoshop CS2 Classroom in a Book. Berkeley: Adobe P, 2005. Make sure CD is included.

Joe Clark, Building Accessible Websites. Indianapolis: New Riders, 2002.

Kelly Goto and Emily Cotler, Web ReDesign 2.0: Workflow that Works. Indianapolis: New Riders, 2005.

Attendance

After SIX absences you will fail the course (six absences is equivalent to missing three weeks of class). Each absence is worth one point from the final grade. Students are considered late if they arrive after the sign-up sheet has gone around the room - lateness equals .5 absences.

Grading

  • Professional site and portfolio – 20%
  • Individual CSS design – 20%
  • Group redesign project – 40%
  • Daily assignments – 14%
  • Attendance – 6%

Late coursework will be factored into your final grade in the following way: for every 3 late assignments, your final grade will be lowered by one full letter grade. Absolutely every assignment needs to be submitted in order to pass the course.

Do not discard any files you create during the semester until you receive a final grade. Be sure to have a backup copy of every assignment. Your webspace is an ideal place to keep backup copies.

Etiquette

The course meets in a computer classroom. Please do not place food or beverages next to the computers - keep them at the center table to avoid damaging the keyboards. Know your username/password and log into the computers at the beginning of class. Do not forget to log out before leaving the classroom.

Open Lab

The CWRL has an open lab (PAR 102) for students who are taking classes in our computer classrooms. All the software is the same as in our classroom. You can log into the PAR 102 computers with your classroom username/password.

Computers are also available to you in the Student Microcomputer Facility (SMF) on the second floor of the Flawn Academic Center (FAC), but software versions might vary.
